Yin-Yang, Five Elements & Meridian System

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is built on three foundational pillars that have guided healing practices for thousands of years. Understanding these concepts is essential to appreciating how TCM views the human body, health, and disease.

Yin-Yang Theory

Yin and Yang represent the two complementary forces that exist in all things. Yin is associated with darkness, cold, passivity, and substance, while Yang represents light, heat, activity, and function. Health is achieved when these forces are in dynamic balance.

In TCM diagnosis, practitioners assess whether a patient's condition stems from an excess or deficiency of Yin or Yang. Treatment aims to restore balance through herbs, acupuncture, diet, and lifestyle adjustments.

Five Elements (Wu Xing)

The Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — describe the fundamental phases of transformation in nature and the human body. Each element corresponds to specific organs, emotions, seasons, colors, and flavors.

Wood

Liver

Spring

Fire

Heart

Summer

Earth

Spleen

Late Summer

Metal

Lungs

Autumn

Water

Kidneys

Winter

The elements interact through generating (sheng) and controlling (ke) cycles, creating a complex web of relationships that TCM practitioners use to understand disease patterns and design treatments.

Meridian System

The meridian system consists of 12 primary channels and 8 extraordinary vessels through which Qi (vital energy) and blood flow. These pathways connect the body's surface with internal organs, forming an integrated network.

Acupuncture and acupressure work by stimulating specific points along these meridians to regulate the flow of Qi, remove blockages, and restore harmony. Each meridian is associated with a specific organ system and has its own set of therapeutic points.
